Clathrate Hydrates: Some New Structural Information

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The accurate prediction of conditions for hydrate formation depends strongly on the availability of good structural information’. For clathrate hydrates, a complete description of structure involves not only the unit cell parameters and average atomic positions, but also the cage occupancies. In order to provide this kind of information, it is necessary to use techniques such as diffraction, which is sensitive to long range order, in combination with techniques such as NMR which are sensitive to local ordef. Previously we have demonstrated the use of NMR methods for the determination of relative cage occupancies for structure I and II hydrates3.

High-pressure gas hydrates.
It has long been known that crystalline hydrates are formed by many simple gases that do not interact strongly with water, and in most cases the gas molecules or atoms occupy 'cages' formed by a framework of water molecules. The majority of these gas hydrates adopt one of two cubic cage structures and are called clathrate hydrates. Notable exceptions are hydrogen and helium which form 'exotic' ...

Many simple gases that do not interact strongly with water form crystalline hydrates in which the gas molecules or atoms occupy ‘cages’ formed by a framework of water molecules. These clathrate hydrates are stabilised by hydrophobic gas-water interactions and are model systems for the study of these interactions. Many gas hydrates also occur in nature and their properties provide a basis for mo...
متن کاملTemperature-dependent Raman Spectroscopic Observation for Structural Transformation and Guest Dynamics of Gas Hydrates and Hydroquinone Clathrates
Clathrates are crystalline inclusion compounds formed by a physically stable reaction between host and guest molecules. Gas hydrate and hydroquinone (HQ) clathrate are one of the most studied and welldefined clathrate compounds. In this study, guest-free, CO2-loaded, CH4-loaded and CO2/CH4-loaded HQ clathrates were synthesized by gas-phase reaction and recrystallization. In addition, pure CO2 a...
متن کاملMolecular Dynamics Simulations of Guest – Host Hydrogen Bonding in Structure I, Ii, and H Clathrate Hydrates
The standard picture is that clathrate hydrates form when hydrophobic guest molecules are compressed with water under high pressure-low temperature conditions. In the ice-like hydrate framework, water molecules form molecule-sized cavities that encapsulate the guests and minimize water-hydrophobic guest interactions. This picture, however, must be modified by observations that many water solubl...
متن کاملNoble gas encapsulation: clathrate hydrates and their HF doped analogues.
The significance of clathrate hydrates lies in their ability to encapsulate a vast range of inert gases. Although the natural abundance of a few noble gases (Kr and Xe) is poor their hydrates are generally abundant. It has already been reported that HF doping enhances the stability of hydrogen hydrates and methane hydrates, which prompted us to perform a model study on helium, neon and argon hy...
